I met 3 Susans in a row. Then 3 Izzy's in a row. I have been here just over a week and I have been to the hot tub 3 times and IKEA twice.
Friday I went to Services. I know, it's not High Holidays, but I thought it'd be a good way to meet people. So, I called the JCC who could not get me off the phone quick enough. I called who they referred me to who immediately sent me to their website and tried to get off the phone- but I wouldn;t let them. As a general rule so far, I have found people are very nice, but uninterested in truly helping. So, I found some clubs on this website. Services were small, but I met some nice people who said they think there's a new temple just for young people downtown; they will email me.
Saturday I went shopping - IKEA, Home Depot, Canadian Tire (think Ace hardware), Wal-Mart, Linens 'n Things, and 2 other home stores, 1 looked exactly like BBB, but more expensive, the other was crap. I schlepped everything upstairs and started putting things together. I mostly bough storage/shelving units so I can get things in closets and out of boxes on my floor.
I saw there's a Jewish ColaClub here called Mosaic. Sunday I met with them for what they described as a "vigorous" hike. I figured a bunch of Jews, how vigorous could it be? The leader (one of the Izzy's) was obnoxious and kept insisting if you wouldn't keep up, leave. Well, there were 24 people, why couldn't we just have a fast group and a slow group? Anyway, everyone else there was nice and I had a great time. One guy (another Izzy) asked me why I was living in SC. I told him there's cheap cost of living. Without skipping a beat he said, "So's India, but I wouldn't want to live there either."
They club mostly does local day hikes and canoe trips. Me and someone else were asking about camping. And, in true ColaClub style, they said - you organize it, we will come! So, I guess I've joined my first group up here. I definitely made some potential friend connections.
Then I went to IKEA again to return and buy. I did not like this IKEA and will not go back. But there are 2 others in town. Too crowded, service terrible and not as large a selection as the one I went to Saturday. I bought more shelves. I put together the shelving unit which fits very snugly in the closet. However, I now realize I want to add the extensions and more shelves on top. But I cannot get to one of the posts to screw the shelves in without taking everything off and the unit completely apart. I can get to 5 of the 6 posts, but that last one.....I need to thing of a solution.
After a day of strenuous hiking then putting together shelves and unpacking, I was sore. Still am. Think I need to call that masseuse in the day spa downstairs....
Oh, gas is now $1.09 a litre. That's up 6 cents in a week. That's 12 cents a gallon in a week.

For next to nother per hour Ikea will not only deliver, but put it together too!
MOSAIC's national web site can be found at http://www.mosaicoutdoor.org/. The Toronto group URL is http://www.mosaictoronto.org/. Looks like they have some good stuff planned.
